Intercom & Telephony Questions
Everything you need to know about PBX, SIP trunks, and phone systems.
What is the difference between a PBX, an intercom, and a telephone system?+
A PBX (Private Branch Exchange) is the central system that manages all internal and external calls within an organisation — routing calls between extensions and connecting to outside lines. An intercom is a point-to-point or broadcast communication system, typically within a building. A telephone system is the broader infrastructure of phones, cabling, and connectivity. Layerix designs and installs all three as part of a unified communication infrastructure.
Do you supply the hardware or only install?+
Both. Layerix can supply and install, or install hardware you have already procured. We are authorised partners or experienced deployers for Panasonic, Grandstream, Yealink, Cisco, and Avaya platforms. We recommend hardware based on your scale and budget — not our margin.
Can you integrate a new PBX with our existing phone lines?+
Yes. Whether you have existing analog POTS lines, ISDN PRI circuits, or SIP trunks, we configure your PBX to use them correctly — with failover between line types where available.
What is SIP trunking and is it better than a traditional phone line?+
SIP trunking delivers telephone lines over your internet connection rather than physical copper circuits. It is typically lower cost, more scalable, and supports features like DID numbers and simultaneous call paths that are expensive or impossible on analog lines. Layerix provisions, configures, and tests SIP trunks as part of every new PBX deployment.
How many extensions can a PBX support?+
Entry-level PBX systems support 8–32 extensions. Mid-range systems support 50–300. Enterprise platforms scale to thousands of extensions across multiple sites. We right-size the platform for your current headcount with room for planned growth — and we document it in the design before any hardware is ordered.
Can the system work across multiple office locations?+
Yes. Multi-site PBX deployments allow users in different offices to dial each other on short extension codes, share IVR and auto-attendant features, and present a single phone number to the outside world. We design and configure the inter-site connectivity as part of the same project.
Do you handle the number porting from our existing provider?+
We assist with the technical aspects of number porting — providing the correct configuration on the PBX to receive ported numbers. The porting process itself is between you and your telecom provider, but we coordinate the technical requirements on your behalf.
Will the system work if the internet goes down?+
Yes — if designed with analog backup lines or a local ISDN PRI. For SIP-only deployments, a secondary SIP trunk on a different broadband circuit provides redundancy. We design failover into every system where uptime is critical, and we test it before handover.
Can you set up call recording?+
Yes. Most modern PBX systems support call recording — either built-in storage or integrated with an external recording server. We configure recording by extension group, incoming line, or all-calls, depending on your compliance and operational requirements.
What is the difference between a digital PBX and a VoIP / IP PBX?+
A digital PBX uses proprietary digital signalling over dedicated cabling to connect phones. A VoIP or IP PBX uses standard Ethernet cabling and internet protocol — phones are just another device on your network. IP PBX systems are more flexible, cheaper to cable, and integrate with softphones and mobile apps. Layerix deploys both, and can bridge existing digital systems with new IP infrastructure.
How long does a typical intercom / PBX installation take?+
A small office system (up to 30 extensions) typically takes 1–2 days. A 100-extension deployment takes 3–5 days. Large campus or multi-site projects are scoped individually. We provide a project timeline before work begins and adhere to it.
Do you provide training after installation?+
Yes. Every Layerix deployment includes user training — covering basic operation for end users and full admin training for whoever manages the system. We also deliver written admin guides and quick-reference cards at handover.
